Three reuse centres in Cornwall are coming together to help raise the profile of furniture reuse in the county, with a little help from the Wombles!
GOFA in Penzance, RE:SOURCE in Bodmin and SOFA Camborne will all be taking part in the first ever Big Womble event next month.
The Big Womble is a national awareness and fundraising campaign run by the Furniture Reuse Network (FRN) that will take place throughout the week commencing 16th Feb 2009.
The unique campaign will help raise money for up to 400 local reuse centre’s around the UK by offering customers a chance to win celebrity household items through a national raffle. Celebrities include: Joanna Lumley, Barbara Windsor, Harry Enfield, and Pat Cash.
The Wombles, who famously cleaned up Wimbledon Common, collecting and recycling rubbish in useful and ingenious ways, are natural champions for the national event. FRN and the Cornish reuse centres are hopeful that more people will be encouraged to follow the Wombles well known motto: “making good use of the things that we find”.
Paul Smith, Chief Executive of FRN comments:
“The reuse organisations in the UK help thousands of people every year with affordable furniture, electrical items, computers and other household items. So far the sector has been able to divert 90,000 tonnes of waste from landfill to reuse centres and finally people’s homes.”
The reuse industry in the UK and especially in Cornwall is growing at a promising rate. Furniture and white goods recycling centres are attempting to satisfy a massive demand for furniture from people on low incomes and with more and more people facing job cuts and financial problems during this period of recession the demand is likely to keep rising.
Justin Olosunde, Manager at GOFA stated:
“Raising awareness of local reuse centre’s like GOFA is vital for the community, as well as the environment. Making sure people know we are here when they are refurbishing or clearing out means that they can donate items, preventing them from throwing them away.”
To help support Cornwall’s reuse centres and The Big Womble, raffle tickets will be on sale at RE:SOURCE, GOFA and SOFA from 2nd February, with the opportunity to win celebrity goodies. Each raffle ticket costs £2, with the income being shared by the participating reuse centre and FRN. The raffle closes on 12th February, with the draw being made on 20th February, so be quick to pick up your ticket before they run out.
